Sign 13:  Cumberland Presbyterian Church – 1940

The Cumberland Presbyterian Church was built from 1843 to 1850 on land donated by Abraham Phelps (see Sign 11). It has served as a church, a school (Delaney Academy), the Newburgh Town Hall from 1965 to 2006, and an event venue. During the Civil War, the steeple bell was rung to summon the Home Guard troops when needed, and the National Guard used it as headquarters for recovery efforts following the disastrous 1937 flood.
