Sign 14: Newburgh Graded School – circa 1907
The Newburgh Graded School was built in 1868 for $14,000 and housed elementary through high school grades. It was located on the western end of where Newburgh Elementary is located today. Notice that the photograph shows a dirt road. The bell from the former Delaney Academy (see sign #13) was passed down to the Graded School. In 1924, a separate Newburgh High School building was built just north of the Graded School. It closed in 1959. The Grade School was demolished in 1958 and the High School in 1969. A new Newburgh Elementary School was built on this site in the early 1970s. The historic school bell now is housed above the foyer of the current school on the State Street end of the building.
