Sign 15: R.S. Fowler’s Livery Stable – circa late 1800s to early 1900s
R. S. Fowler’s Livery stable was established in 1886 just north of the current Newburgh Elementary School site, now a parking lot. It was one of several downtown livery stables that catered to the needs of horse and buggy transportation. They would rent out horses and carriages, and board, feed, groom, and exercise horses. They sold grain and hay and equipment and might even have blacksmith services. This business changed with the times, transitioning to auto repair in 1919 and a Phillips 66 gas station in 1936.
