Sign 5:  Store Boat – circa mid to late 1800s

Floating merchant shops brought items such as china and  glassware (as the one in this photograph), tools, and furniture and services such as photography to communities along the river that were not able to support  merchants like these on their own. The photograph states that the “voyage depended on manpower and current” but some store flatboats were towed upstream by steamboats.
