Sign 9: Phelps-Sergeant Block – 1907
The Phelps Block building was erected by Newburgh entrepreneur Abraham Phelps in 1830 originally as his home but later converted to a variety of commercial uses, including shoe store, tin shop, bookstore, doctor’s office, post office, gas and electric company (1940s to 1970), and fashion boutique. Political speeches were often made from the upper story balconies to address the crowds gathered below in the heart of Downtown.
